End of the year is coming!! Here are some ways to help your child at home now and over the summer. We would hate for your students to forget things over the summer!
1
. Math- Do the homework! These are the exact same skills we are learning that day in school. So even if they try and you check it, or you work through it together it will help! Also, look at any math assessments you receive back from me. Look at the problems your child got wrong, especially on the red test, because they get another shot to take the test. After looking at those incorrect problems use those as practice problems to do at home, just change the numbers. I will always take the students higher test score.
2.
Reading- Read every night, 1 or more books. Especially any books given by Ms. Anderson or any special teachers. These are books at their level. Don't forget to ask the student questions about their reading to check for comprehension. If they are stuck on a word remind them to use a strategy!
3.
Sight Words- Check the blog, I share specific ones to practice for that week. I sent home a blue sheet that has the exact sight words your student needs to practice. I will be checking sight words 1 last time the week of 5/23/16. The end of year goal for sight words is 150! They will be learning 150 more in second grade so we don't want to fall to far behind. If you need fun ideas to practice sight words at home, check out Pinterest.com. Students can learn and practice sight words in fun ways and games!
4.
Writing- In first grade, we want to be able to write 3 or more complete sentences, because in second grade they will need to write even more.
Be sure to look for these things in their writing:
-capital letter at beginning of a sentence and letter I
-finger spaces, practice by actually putting their finger down on the paper
-spelling sight words correctly
-ending punctuation, mostly periods
-neat handwriting/proper letter formation, we practice how to correctly form letters at the beginning of the year, but over time it fades away. They will not cover proper handwriting in 2nd grade.
-lowercase letters, make sure they are not in the middle of a word or sentence!
You can also write a messy sentences and have them rewrite or tell you what needs to be fixed in the sentence! Writing lines help when practicing, but its good to practice without too because in 2nd grade they start to disappear.
5.
Phonics- Check my blog, I share the specific sound to practice that week that I will test on. Usually some of those words posted on their are the actual ones students are tested on. Look at past assessments and see which tests went badly, then you know what sound your student needs more practice on!
